Real Life Case Example: Debt Settlement Arrangement (DSA) in Ireland

Single Parent DSA

A Debt Settlement Arrangement (DSA) is a formal debt solution available in Ireland that allows people to restructure unsecured debts and pay them off in an affordable way, over an agreed period of time. The remaining balance is usually written off at the end of successful completion. It’s designed to give people a fresh start while ensuring repayments remain affordable.

In this case study, we look at how a DSA helped one individual facing financial difficulty after a sudden change in personal circumstances.

Background

Our client, a 33-year-old mother of three young children, found herself struggling financially after a recent separation. Her former partner’s gambling issues led to the breakdown of their relationship, and with no maintenance support being provided, she became solely responsible for her children.

Despite working full-time as an assistant manager, the shift in her circumstances meant she was unable to keep up with contractual debt repayments. She also had to move back in with her father for support.

Recognising that the debts had become unmanageable, she contacted McCambridge Duffy to explore her options.

The Problem

Before entering the DSA, she had unsecured debts of €31,555 with monthly repayments of over €615. These payments were no longer sustainable given her situation.

This case highlights how what may be considered a moderate level of debt can quickly become overwhelming following a life event such as a relationship breakdown.

The Solution: A DSA

With the help of one of our Personal Insolvency Practitioners (PIP), a Debt Settlement Arrangement was put forward and approved by her creditors.

  • Her monthly repayments were reduced to €220.
  • The arrangement was set for five years.
  • Over the course of the DSA, she would contribute €13,200 in total.

At the end of the arrangement, the remaining €18,355 (including PIP fees which are built into the affordable repayments) will be written off.

The Outcome

The DSA has allowed our client to:

  • Make affordable, sustainable repayments.
  • Keep essential assets needed for work and family life.
  • Look forward to a debt-free future at the end of the five-year term.

This case shows how a DSA can provide real relief, structure, and a clear path forward, even when circumstances change unexpectedly.
